County officials remind the public to sign up for emergency alerts
WAILUKU — Maui is still in an active fire season, and the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) urges the public to sign up for MEMA alerts to receive emergency notifications.
Saturday’s brush fire is a good example of the importance of staying informed. The alerts are sent to registered users via text message, e-mail, pager and/or voicemail, based on preference. MEMA alerts allow public safety officials to provide emergency notifications and direction.
The public can sign up for these alerts here: www.mauicounty.gov/983/MEMA-Alerts.
On Saturday, Aug. 26, Maui Fire Department (MFD) responded to a brush fire at approximately 12:45 p.m. located near Kaanapali at Kualapa Loop and Anapuni Loop mauka of the Kaanapali Resort area.
Firefighters arrived on scene at approximately 12:55 p.m. and stopped forward progress of a seven-acre fire before it would reach any homes or communities.
MEMA activated four sirens around 1:10 p.m. from Wahikuli to Honokowai in the area to notify the community.
MFD is still investigating the cause of the fire.
