NAPILI — Maui Preparatory Academy is pleased to announce the recipients of three scholarships for middle and high school students.

Sloane Jucker (Class of 2026), daughter of Mike and Karin Jucker, and Max Reed (Class of 2028), son of Brian and Janelle Reed, each received a 100 Waves Scholarship.

Longtime Maui resident Victor Cullen made a personal goal to surf 100 waves in one session. In preparation for the momentous occasion, Victor collected pledges and donations from supporters.

“This is my way of giving back to a community that has been great to me over the years,” Cullen commented. “How great to think that this could make a positive impact on a student and their family.” 100 Waves Scholarship applicants were asked to explain how they exemplify ho’omau (seeking and appreciating challenges), one of Maui Prep’s Ten Commitments to Living Aloha.

Sloane, a current Maui Prep freshman, wrote, “[I] better myself through challenges that can expand my knowledge, mature myself, and improve my strength. I exemplify this through trying new things, and persisting through challenges.”

Sloane is an avid surfer, currently competing in #1 girls on the Pueo Surfing team. She also played volleyball and was named to the Head of School’s List after her first semester at Maui Prep.

“My favorite part of attending Maui Prep is the opportunities and help I get to further myself academically, and to find my personal interests that will guide me in college and beyond,” Sloane said.

“For the coming years, I look forward to trying new things through new electives, teachers and classes.”

Seventh-grader Max Reed received the other 100 Waves Scholarship. Max wrote about his perseverance with math as he strives to exemplify ho’omau: “I’ve been trying to understand and overcome the challenges I’ve faced throughout my middle school years, by studying. I am determined to work hard to excel.”

The annual Pueo Scholarship was awarded to current eighth-grader Lily Buden.

The daughter of Jamie and Michael Buden will join the Maui Prep ‘ohana as a member of the Class of 2027.

Born and raised on Maui, Lily is a passionate waterwoman, recently joining the F-One wing foiling team.

She is excited for her Maui Prep experience — particularly the small class sizes and close relationships with her classmates and teachers.

“I know I can get a great education and be prepared for college,” Lily said.

She hopes to join the school’s golf and girls basketball team, which looks to form its first girls team for MIL play during the next school year.

The Pueo Scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition award generously funded by benefactors who seek to provide a college-preparatory education for students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend Maui Prep.

Founded in 2005, Maui Prep offers a broad knowledge base in math, science, world languages, English, history and the culture and ecosystem of Maui.

The campus, formerly part of Maui Land and Pineapple Co. in Napili, features the Graham Center for Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship, the Narayan Design Lab, and a gymnasium and theater located in the Bozich Center for Athletics and Performing Arts.
