Lahaina United Methodist Church restoration project underway

Work on the east and north sides of the church building has been completed.
LAHAINA — A major restoration project at Lahaina United Methodist Church started on Oct. 11.
Located at the corner of Front and Baker streets, the church is celebrating the centennial of its construction in 1922.
According to the church’s website, “Until 1922, Lahaina Methodist Church was located near the prison on Waine’e Street. Our current building was dedicated on October 8, 1922. Elevated by lava rock, buttress-like piers, the church has a Craftsman bungalow style on the exterior and a New England-style interior, with Japanese design elements woven throughout the building.”
Rick Kimball, who is serving as a liaison between the church and contractor Scott Brothers Pacific, said the work began with two weeks of treatment of all the lead paint present before actual paint preparation work could begin.
“Work has finally moved around to the front of the church, most weathered from facing west, with the east and north sides of the building finished. There’s been a lot of termite damage discovered along the way that had to be dealt with through some creative wood restoration and carpentry,” he noted.
“Tom Scott (Scott Brothers Pacific) is contracting the entire restoration project… there could be no higher praise I could give to Tom for his dedication, knowledge and his crew’s work.”
