Nine Rotary Clubs on Maui to host End Polio Now event

By Staff | Oct 7, 2022

Rotary District 5,000 Governor Randy Hart will speak at the End Polio Now event on Oct. 10 in Maalaea.

MAALAEA — On Monday, Oct. 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., the nine Rotary Clubs of Maui will host an End Polio Now social, informational and fundraising event at Seascape Restaurant located in Maalaea.

There is no cost to attend the event. There will be a special pupu and beverage menu created by Maui Ocean Center Food and Beverage Manager James Morrison.

Attendees are encouraged to order food and/or beverages. Attendees can purchase a ticket for $5 to qualify to bid in the live auction of nine special gifts. All proceeds from the ticket sales and live auction items will go to the Rotary International End Polio Now initiative.

Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988.

In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary in its commitment to ending polio. Since 2013, the Gates Foundation has matched every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication two-to-one, up to $50 million per year.

Rotary, with matching funds from the Gates Foundation, has contributed more than $1.6 billion to end polio. Since Rotary started the fight against polio, Rotary has reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 percent and reached more than 2.5 billion children with the vaccine.

This event will feature keynote presentations from Rotary District 5,000 Governor Randy Hart and District 5,000 End Polio Now Director Roz Cooper. A special highlight of the event will be the induction of new members into Maui Rotary Clubs.

Members of the public are invited to attend. Register to Maui Rotary Resource Chair Joanne Laird via e-mail at mamalrd01@gmail.com.
