Maui County planning director to speak at Rotary meeting

County Planning Director Michele Chouteau McLean will discuss the Planning Department, recent accomplishments and future projects and goals during her presentation to the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset.
WEST MAUI — Michele Chouteau McLean will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15.
The meeting will be held at the Royal Ocean Terrace Restaurant at the Royal Lahaina Resort and hybrid via Zoom.
Her presentation will be an overview of the Planning Department — the four divisions and what each of them does. It will also touch on recent accomplishments, as well as projects and goals the department is working on for the upcoming few years.
McLean has been the planning director since July 2018 and served as deputy director from January 2011 until June 2018.
She previously served as the deputy director for the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC), where she worked for more than five years and then served as its chair for eight years.
Prior to the KIRC, she was a planning consultant in the private sector and worked as a legislative analyst for the Maui County Council’s Planning Committee.
Before moving to Maui in 1994, she worked on Capitol Hill for several years, her final position being a Senior Research Analyst with the House leadership. She specialized in social domestic policy.
McLean has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Vassar College and earned her AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners) certification in December 2018.
