LAHAINA — A festive holiday season is planned for Lahaina this year with free events continuing for the next two weekends in December. In celebration of the season, the Lahaina Banyan Tree will be lit with 3,500 colored lights that will be illuminated nightly at 5:45 p.m. and will remain lit until the end of the month. Come to historic Lahaina, visit the shops and restaurants, and enjoy a stroll under the canopy of colored lights.
The Kanikapila Serenaders will perform on Thursday, Dec. 9, with a free concert on the Baldwin Home Museum lawn from 6 to 7 p.m. Limited seating will be provided, and low beach chairs and blankets are welcome.
The tenants of the Old Lahaina Courthouse will hold an Open House on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Lahaina Visitor Center will be hosting the Book Launch of “Dropping Anchor,” the third anthology of short stories and poems by local authors from Maui Writers Ink. The book is a collection of the authors’ adventures: some funny, some scary, all thought-provoking and just in time for holiday shopping. Maui Writers Ink’s first two books (“Short Stories and Poems,” and “Supernatural Tales”) will also be available. These local authors will be present to sign books: 10 a.m. to noon, Linda Lyerly and Lynette Chun; 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Sookie Kunst; 12 to 2 p.m., Anna Binkley; 2 to 4 p.m., Elaine Gallant; 4 to 6 p.m., Louise Palmer; and 6 to 8 p.m., Everett Peacock.
With much cheer, candy, cookies and their famous Christmas tree, the artists of Lahaina Arts Society and Lahaina Arts Guild will be in the Banyan Tree Gallery at the Old Lahaina Courthouse throughout the Open House. Enter to win “Hawaii Sunrise,” a Mark Thurber 30” x 10″ aluminum surfboard photograph. All visitors to the gallery who sign up for the giveaway on Dec. 10 will have a chance to win. The winner will be selected randomly, announced by Tuesday, Dec. 14, and the surfboard will be mailed to them. Come join the fun!
Art Night will also be celebrated on Friday, Dec. 10, at the 21 participating galleries all within walking distance along Front Street. Expect to see new shows, artist demonstrations and exhibits of local and international artists. For a list of galleries, go to www.lahainarestoration.org/friday-night-is-art-night/. Village Galleries will be hosting Rich Kenny, the 2022 Lahaina Poster artist, who will be signing and personalizing posters.
The Lahaina Snowman is making a comeback on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Campbell Park next to the Baldwin Home Museum. Created by Lahaina Ice Company, the seven- foot tall Lahaina Snowman will be available for photos with friends and family. Bring your own camera or phone. Be sure to get there early because the Lahaina Snowman can melt!
The following Saturday, Dec. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m, keiki 12 and under are invited to play in the snow zone at Campbell Park. Admission is one can of food to be donated to the Maui Food Bank. At the same time, cookie decorating for keiki will be held on the lawn of the Baldwin Home Museum.
