Lahainaluna Ho‘oko Math Program recruiting participants for the 2021-22 School Year

By Staff | Nov 24, 2021

The Ho‘oko Math Program will accept applications from students throughout the year.

LAHAINA — In 2002, Richard and Pat Endsley co-founded and served as directors of the Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project. Funded by the Lahaina Complex Education Foundation (LCEF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, the project provided language arts and mathematics programs to students at the four Lahaina public schools — King Kamehameha III and Princess Nahienaena Elementary Schools, Lahaina Intermediate School and Lahainaluna High School.

After 20 years of service for the Lahaina community, the Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project concluded at the end of the 2019-20 school year.

Although the tutor project has concluded, Lahainaluna High School has continued to work with the Lahaina Complex Education Foundation to establish the Lahainaluna Ho’oko Math Program for the 2021-2022 school year. Funded by a grant provided by LCEF, the program provides math intervention for Lahainaluna High School students with math skills needing improvement. It is overseen by Tutoring Coordinator and LHS Math Teacher Michelle Abad.

The objective of the Lahainaluna Ho’oko Math Program is to help all students with low math skills to perform at grade level, increase understanding of math concepts and build confidence in solving problems.

During the 2017-18 school year, the math program was first piloted with a small group of students as part of the Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project. Lahainaluna math teachers identified students from their classes in need of additional support.

Participating students were paired with volunteer peer tutors and worked with them once a week to improve their math skills. That year, the program had seen improvements with most participants becoming more proficient in their math abilities and a decrease in failing students. The program successfully continued for the next two school years but did not run during the 2020-21 school year due to the COVI9-19 pandemic.

The Lahainaluna Ho’oko Math Program began accepting participants in September and will accept applications from students requesting to participate continuously throughout the year. The program is free for all participants, and tutoring sessions are held every Tuesday after school.

It is open to all Lahainaluna High School students, including students who are looking to brush up on their math skills before the start of their math courses in the Spring Semester.

Students are matched with tutors who are proficient in Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. Free bus passes are provided for students needing transportation after tutoring sessions. Snacks and refreshments are also provided.

For more information, or to request an application, contact Michelle Abad at michelle.abad@k12.hi.us.

Lahainaluna High School is delighted for the opportunity to continue the Ho’oko Math Program. The school would like to thank Pat and Richard Endlsey and the Lahaina Complex Education Foundation for the continued support provided to its students.
