LAHAINA — Ben Lowenthal, local lawyer, blogger, columnist and historian, will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s Hybrid meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30. The meeting will be in-person at the Royal Ocean Terrace Restaurant at the Royal Lahaina Resort and offered virtually via Zoom.

Lowenthal grew up in Peahi, Maui between Haiku and Huelo. He was educated almost exclusively in public schools on Maui and graduated from H. P. Baldwin High School. He earned his undergraduate degree in Journalism and studied Classical Language and Literature at San Francisco State University. He earned his law degree at the University of Kansas School of Law.

After law school, he worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Judge Corinne K. A. Watanabe at the Intermediate Court of Appeals in Honolulu. In 2007, he returned to Maui and entered private practice at the Law Office of Philip H. Lowenthal representing clients in civil, criminal and appellate cases for ten years. In 2017, he became a Deputy Public Defender at the Maui office.

He reports cases from Hawaii appellate courts in his law blog, “Hawaii Legal News,” and writes about Hawaii history and culture in his column “The State of Aloha” appearing in The Maui News. He is a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association’s Civics Education Committee and a board of trustee with the Maui Historical Society. He enjoys playing music, reading and supporting Liverpool Football Club.
