Allyson Scott will make her presentation from California via Zoom on the large screen to the in-person participants at the Rotary meeting.

WEST MAUI — Allyson Scott, the associate director of the Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling at the University of California San Francisco, will be the presenter at the hybrid meeting of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Royal Ocean Terrace Restaurant at the Royal Lahaina Resort.

Although the field of genetic counseling has been in existence for over 50 years, it continues to be unfamiliar to many.

The need for genetic counselors has grown rapidly as our knowledge of genetics in medicine has evolved.

Scott’s presentation has the goal of familiarizing the community with the field of genetic counseling, discussing the various areas of practice and exploring how we anticipate the field to advance in the future.

Scott also cares for patients in the Prenatal Diagnostic Center. Although she sees patients for any prenatal genetics referral, she specializes in hemoglobinopathies, which are disorders affecting red blood cells (such as sickle cell disease).

She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of California, San Diego, followed by a Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling from Northwestern University. She is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
