Two Maui Rotary Clubs capture awards at Rotary District Conference

Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset President Vanessa Moreno said, “We humbly accept this award and look forward to many more years of service.”
LAHAINA — The Rotary International 2021 District 5,000 Conference was recently held virtually. At this annual conference, District Governor Naomi Masuno presented awards to clubs who were judged in several categories for final determination of Club of the Year.
Rotary International District 5,000 is comprised of 53 clubs. There are 18 small clubs (18 or less members), 18 medium clubs (19-29 members) and 17 large clubs (30-plus members) in District 5,000.
Awards were presented to the first runner-up and then the first place in each size division for seven categories: Community Service, Membership, Vocational Service, Youth Service, International Service, Public Image, and Foundation Programs.
The awards were presented throughout the virtual event. Club presidents submitted information on their club’s activities in each category during the Rotary International year from July 1, 2020-March 31, 2021.
The submissions and one-page narratives were then reviewed and rated by presidents in categories other than their own. Ratings were then submitted to the Awards Chair for final tabulation.
The Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui was named Medium Club of the Year for earning the following first place awards in the Medium Club Division: Vocational Service, Youth Service, International Service and Membership.
This club earned first-runner up awards in Public Image and Foundation Programs.
President Wendy Hornack said, “I am honored and so excited that the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui won the Medium Club of the Year. My club members work year around on service projects and fundraisers for the community. They constantly support local non-profits and truly show the meaning of service above self. Their humbleness would never ask for recognition, and that’s why I am even more proud for them. My club members are my Rotary ‘ohana, and my children and I would not be where we are without them. I am so thankful to be a part of such an amazing team and completely honored to lead them. Mahalo to all my fellow Rotarians for this privilege.”
The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset was named Large Club of the Year for earning the following first place awards in the Large Club Division: Vocational Service, Youth Service, and Public Image.
They earned first runner-up awards in Community Service and Membership.
President Vanessa Moreno said, “What an amazing honor that the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset be awarded Large Club of the Year! As the smallest club in our category, this accomplishment could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of all our members. Year-round, we strive to provide opportunities and build everlasting relationships within our community to make a difference the Rotary way.”
