Learning Endeavors offering summer camps for Maui youth

By Staff | May 28, 2021

Keiki will investigate the great outdoors on Maui during the Citizen Science Summer Camps.

WAILUKU — Learning Endeavors is offering its Citizen Science Summer Camp with sessions in June for ages 8-12 and in July for ages 10-14.

Campers investigate the great outdoors on the island of Maui, including forests, tide pools and wetlands. Each session engages youth in hands-on science and art projects, with culminating performances on the final day.

The June Session will take place from June 7-10 at various locations each day from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The first day will be a hiking adventure through Waihe’e Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge. The second day will be a continuation of wetlands exploration, this time at Kealia Ponds National Wildlife Refuge. On days three and four, the group will be moving onto an investigation of tide pools at the North Kihei Marine Reserve.

On June 10, the camp will culminate in a project and performance day that families are encouraged to attend.

The July Session will take place from July 21-23 at the Waihe’e Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In contrast to the June session, the July session will focus on delving deeper into the intricate ecosystems of one singular location.

Campers will engage in GPS scavenger hunts, environmental stewardship projects, games, data collection and more. No prior knowledge of citizen science is required to participate in either session.

“Since 2013, we have been offering and promoting field-based, innovative science education through camps and other programs for schools,” said Diana Papini Warren, executive director of Learning Endeavors.

“We are excited to be offering our Citizen Science Adventure Camps in 100 percent outdoor locations, offering a safe learning environment and a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature.”

Each camp session is $195 per student and includes a T-shirt. Families with siblings will be offered a discounted rate of $15 off the additional child.
