Volunteers help maintain Sue D. Cooley Stadium
LAHAINA — In what can only be described as a labor of love, more than a dozen volunteers have maintained the landscaping tasks in and around the Sue D. Cooley Stadium at Lahainaluna High School.
The stadium itself is the compilation of the generosity of one part-time West Maui resident, Sue Cooley, and the hard work of the community members that made up the board of the Lahainaluna High School Foundation.
A one-of-a-kind project in Hawaii, the stadium was built in 2005 without funding from the Department of Education.
In 2019, it was determined that the landscaped areas in and around the stadium needed to be attended to on a more regular basis, and in July of that year, a monthly program was developed.
Since then, Luna faithful from the Friends of Lahainaluna Football, along with others from the track and girls soccer team, and members of the Lahainaluna staff and foundation members. have kept this special facility looking good.
Like any other volunteer-led program, some of our participants have fallen off, and we need to replenish our crew.
If Lahainaluna and the Sue D. Cooley Stadium hold a special place in your heart, we would love to have you join us.
We meet at the stadium every third Saturday at 7 a.m. When we have a full crew, we are usually done in under two hours.
