Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset member Liz May receives ‘Be the Inspiration’ Recognition Award
LAHAINA – In honor of Rotary International 2018-19 President Barry Rassin’s theme “Be the Inspiration,” Liz May was the recipient of this award recognition for the ten Rotary Clubs of Maui.
May was selected by Assistant District Governor Marti Wukelic to be recognized for her outstanding inspirational service to Rotary. At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, May was awarded a unique pin for individual excellence.
According to Rotary International, recognition or awards serve two purposes. One is to recognize superior performance. The other is to motivate others to achieve more.
Rotary International asked district leaders to employ their knowledge of Rotary and service in recognizing excellence in the field.
Wukelic said, “When, as assistant governor, I received the kuleana to pass on our ‘Be the Inspiration’ Award, it seemed like an impossible task, as there are so many Rotarians that I respect and admire within our clubs. So I took a moment to reflect on what inspires me, personally, and came up with these traits:
“When someone is internally driven to help. Maybe in small ways, maybe quietly, but always simply because they saw a need and were personally moved to fill it. It isn’t related to wanting accolades or a pat on the back or any other external recognition. It’s simply to do right,” she continued.
“Secondly, I thought of my favorite part of the Four-Way Test: ‘Will it build goodwill and better friendships?’ We Rotarians are honorable people, but also human and sometimes face challenges in working within our clubs. So when I was thinking of someone who is able take the high road and stay above the fray, it inspires me.
“I also found that Liz May simply goes about her life in giving… not because she wants to be a role model, but simply because that is who she is.
“When I looked at those traits I immediately thought of Liz May. She is the Rotarian who most inspires me, and I know that she serves as an inspiration to many, not just Rotarians.”
There are ten Rotary Clubs on Maui and Lanai. Rotary is a leadership organization made up of local business, professional and civic leaders.
The club members meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and get things done in the community.
