Baldwin Class of 1972 planning 45th reunion

KAHULUI – The Baldwin High School Class of 1972 will celebrate its 45th reunion with a banquet at the Maui Beach Hotel’s Elleair Ballroom on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.

WAILUKU – The county’s Used Motor Oil (UMO) Program for home mechanics has been suspended immediately, due to increased costs and a lack of available funding. The program suspension is expected to be temporary; in the meantime, anyone doing mechanic work at home is asked to store the used motor oil.

“The UMO Program had been managed using a state fund, but those funds are no longer available,” said Michael Miyamoto, deputy director of the Department of Environmental Management (DEM). “DEM has requested from the council a supplemental budget increase to manage this very worthwhile program through the end of this fiscal year, June 30, 2017. We are confident that we will receive the funds, but until then, we ask that residents store their used motor oil safely.”

Maui County estimates that residents changing their own motor oil turn in about 21,000 gallons of used motor oil annually to the UMO Program. The program is one of the county’s most environmentally important recycling initiatives, as one gallon of used motor oil can contaminate millions of gallons of water.

Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise to award scholarships

LAHAINA – Financial help to pay for training in areas such as agriculture, auto mechanics, welding, cosmetology or any trade or non-academic occupation is now available through two $2,500 scholarships from the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise.

Applicants can be of any age to receive these funds, and the training can include apprenticeships, hands-on learning or a variety of non-traditional formats.

Students planning to attend vocational training in college or university are also eligible to apply.

The Rotary Club is seeking applicants who have a passion for their chosen career and need financial help to achieve their goals.

Parent meeting set for 2017 graduation

LAHAINA – Parents of Lahainaluna High School’s Class of 2017 should plan ahead to attend a mandatory pre-graduation meeting on either Sunday, March 5, at 3 p.m. or Monday, March 6, at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

In celebration of the Napili Kai Foundation’s 50th anniversary, visit the Sea House Restaurant for special cocktail selections and special menu options at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Sea House will be donating profits from these unique items to the Napili Kai Foundation during the month of February. The nonprofit foundation is the longest running weekly keiki hula show in the State of Hawaii, performing every Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. at Napili Kai Beach Resort. The foundation program is free of charge to the keiki members and also offers a higher education scholarship program that sets it apart from other hula groups. Important information regarding academic requirements, the Senior Contract, and the arrangements for graduation itself will be provided by the senior vice principal, senior guidance counselor and the senior class advisor.

Senior Contracts, which require the signatures of both the student and a parent or guardian, will be distributed at the meeting and must be signed and returned by March 17, before leaving for Spring Break.

Any parent who cannot attend the group sessions will need to make an individual appointment with Principal Daniel Espaniola.

If seniors have not yet ordered their caps and gowns, they should see their class advisor, Pakalana Phillips, to do so immediately, as they will not be permitted to participate in Commencement Exercises without a cap and gown.
