The 20th annual Hula Grill Kaanapali Keiki Ukulele Contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, starting at 10 a.m. Keiki in grades 1-12 will compete for great prizes and bragging rights at this long-running contest. Maurer of Assistance Dogs of Hawaii to speak at Rotary meeting

LAHAINA – On Tuesday, Oct. 18, Maureen Maurer, the director of Assistance Dogs of Hawaii, will speak at the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s evening meeting.

Maurer will discuss the different types of assistance dogs and the growing number of ways that these dogs help people with disabilities and other special needs. She will also share the latest research in the field of medical scent detection, where dogs are trained to detect life-threatening medical conditions.

Maurer cofounded Assistance Dogs of Hawaii with her husband, Will, in 2000 and has over 20 years of experience training guide dogs. She has presented at conferences around the world, speaking about her innovative training methods and the potential that dogs have to help people in need.

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s community speaker series takes place during club meetings, which are held on the first, third and fifth Tuesday of the month at the Royal Ocean Terrace Restaurant, Royal Lahaina Resort, Kaanapali, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Maui’s well-known actor and theater director, Rick Scheideman, will once again be performing his one-man shows at the historic Pioneer Inn Courtyard this fall season. Festival to benefit LHS programs

LAHAINA – The Lahainaluna High School Festival will debut on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 4 to 9 p.m. on the LHS campus.

The theme is “I Ka Nani O Lele – Amidst the beauty of Lahaina.”

Enjoy an evening of family fun, food and entertainment, as the Lahainaluna community and Maui visitors join together to celebrate and support the student activities, events and athletics of Lahainaluna High School.

Festival attractions include 15 of Maui’s favorite eateries and food trucks, local artisans and vendors presenting their crafts and clothing, game booths and keiki activities, a fabulous silent auction (over 40 restaurants, activities and hotel prizes) and an amazing lineup of talented Maui musicians.

Na Hoaloha to hold benefit aboard NCL’s Pride of America

KAHULUI – Na Hoaloha will hold a benefit, “A Tribute to Our Kupuna,” hosted by Norwegian Cruise Lines, on Sunday, Nov. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Na Hoaloha will provide shuttle service to the pier, where attendees will board the Pride of America for a three-course luncheon with champagne and wine, entertainment and a silent auction.

Maui Mauka Conservation Awareness Training set

KAHULUI – Maui Mauka Conservation Awareness Training will be held at the University of Hawaii Maui College on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 9 a.m.

Environmental interpretation plays a significant role in nature-based tourism and is mutually beneficial to tour operators, visitors, conservation groups and the nature-based tourism economy, according to UHMC.

The goal of Maui Mauka Conservation Awareness Training is to educate tour operators and guides about native ecosystems and species found in Hawaii, as well as projects that are helping conserve them.

Presentations about conservation and the natural environment are offered by representatives from the Maui Invasive Species Committee, East Maui Watershed Partnership, and Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project.

Training will be held at the CHTAR Community Service Building at UHMC. The training is free, and tour operators and guides are encouraged to come.

Philippine Consulate to hold mobile outreach for Maui

WAILUKU – The county Department of Housing and Human Concerns, Immigrant Services Division, announced that the public is invited to reserve an appointment at the Philippine Consulate mobile outreach on Maui on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16.

The outreach will provide on-island services for Philippine Passport renewal, dual citizenship and authentication.

Appointments are required and can be made in-person at the Maui County Immigrant Services Division offices.

Priority will be given to expired passports or passports expiring within the next six months, disabled or aged applicants and emergency travel.

Anyone wishing to reserve an appointment should bring the following items: completed application, Philippine Passport, Permanent Resident Card and $6.45 priority stamp.

If your current passport does not have an electronically readable chip, an NSO-issued birth certificate is also required.

The Immigrant Services Division Main Office is located at 2200 Main St., Suite 547, in Wailuku. The Lahaina Satellite Office is located at the West Maui Senior Center at 778 Pauoa St. in Lahaina; it is open Thursdays only from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Lahaina Intermediate School receives construction funds

LAHAINA – The state Department of Education recently informed West and South Maui Rep. Angus McKelvey that construction to relocate and construct temporary facilities at Lahaina Intermediate School will be initiated shortly.

The contract has been awarded to Arisumi Brothers Inc. in the amount of $877,448.

There will be some disruption and disturbance during the construction work.

The DOE informed McKelvey that work crews will do their best to minimize inconvenience where practical.

Church to offer workshop

LAHAINA – “Finding God in All Things,” a time of contemplation and spiritual renewal, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, Lahaina.

This workshop will offer spacious time in the beauty of God’s creation to discern God’s presence and action, experience anew God’s presence without and within, reflect God’s prayers for us, and give thanks for all things.

Lahaina Hongwanji Mission to hold fall bazaar

LAHAINA – Lahaina Hongwanji Mission will hold its annual Fall Autumn Fest Bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 15, on the 551 Wainee St. church grounds from 8 a.m. to noon.

Craft items, lots of rummage, plants, fresh cut flowers, baked goods, assorted sushi, bentos, chow fun, ono huli chicken and other food items will be available for sale. Walgreens will be at the bazaar to provide flu shots.

The newly formed Lahaina Hongwanji Aikido Club will have registration for aikido classes. There will also be a silent auction by the Napili Kai Foundation to benefit their keiki hula program.

A second book signing by author Howard Fields will continue the storyline of Lahaina Hongwanji member Tommy Sarashina centering on his father, Rev. Shinri Sarashina, and his family. Available will be this second book, “First Taken, Last Released, Overlooked World War II Internment.”

Meeting to discuss Lahaina Ferry Pier Improvements

LAHAINA – Rep. Angus McKelvey, Sen. Rosalyn Baker, Department of Land and Natural Resources officials and the project consultants provide the Lahaina community with an update on the Lahaina Ferry Pier Improvement Project along with the plans for the ferry pier, site and Harbor Office at a meeting on Thursday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Na ‘Aikane o Maui Cultural Center at 562-A Front St., Lahaina.

The public will be invited to view the latest plans for the new ferry pier, site and Harbor Office.

County Councilwoman Elle Cochran, representatives from DLNR’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation and Engineering Division will also attend the meeting.
