The 11th annual Ku Mai Ka Hula Competition will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater at 1 p.m. The event will feature award-winning halau from Hawaii, the continental U.S. and Japan competing in solo and group performances. Male and female dancers perform both kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (modern) hula stylings, judged by renowned, prestigious kumu hula. Expect to see halau competing in a level of performance as in more well-known competitions, yet this event takes place right here on Maui! Tickets are $25; call the MACC Box Office at 242-SHOW.

Event to benefit the Lahaina Complex tutoring program

WEST MAUI – Beyond the Rainbow Foundation and People for Educational Equality will stage the Anuenue Gala on Oct. 20, 2016 at the Sheraton Maui Resort.

This benefit for the Lahaina Complex After School Tutoring Program will feature dance music by Jimmy Mac & the Kool Kats.

Two ticket options are available. A dinner-dessert-dance package from 5:45 to 10 p.m. is on sale for $180 before Sept. 15 and $200 after. George Kahumoku Jr.’s Grammy Award-winning Slack Key Show-Masters of Hawaiian Music is performed every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Napili Kai Beach Resort’s Aloha Pavilion. Hosted by George with his Slack Key Show ‘Ohana — Peter deAquino, Sterling Seaton and dancer Wainani Kealoha — the show’s special guests include many of Hawaii’s award-winning performing artists. Volunteer training slated at Hospice Maui

WAILUKU – Hospice Maui will offer its annual volunteer training on Oct. 18-29.

Volunteers have been the corner stone of Hospice Maui’s compassionate care for 35 years. Volunteers report the training to be incredibly beneficial to the individuals they have the privilege of serving, and rewarding and transformational for the volunteer.

Free kidney disease education classes offered

KAHULUI – Rainbow Dialysis Clinics last week announced that the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii (NKFH) Maui Office will host kidney disease education classes, known as Kidney Smart, at no cost to the community on the third Tuesday each month.

These instructor-led kidney health education classes will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about how kidneys function, the effects of kidney disease and the various treatment options available to patients on Maui. They will also give an overview of the role medications, diet and nutrition play in kidney disease management and prevention.

Classes are slated for 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 at the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii Maui Office at 353 Ano St. in Kahului.

The classes are free and open to the public. They are designed for those diagnosed with kidney disease, along with their caregivers, family and friends.

In related news, on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the National Kidney Foundation will hold its “Da Kidney Da Kine” event at Lahaina Cannery Mall.

Free and open to all, the event will feature live entertainment, kidney disease screenings, blood pressure and glucose checks, vision screenings, and interviews with clinicians.
