Students’ art and literature to be featured at Art in Bloom show
LAHAINA – Sacred Hearts School is proud to announce its first annual Art in Bloom show on Saturday, April 16.
In this new event – the first annual children’s art and literature exhibit and fundraiser – the talents of youth will be showcased for the entire community to enjoy.
Collections, among many, will include three-dimensional art and inspirational Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poems written by SHS students.
These projects were made possible under the direction and guidance of art instructor Chelsea Toia-Vaas and eighth grade teacher Mary Anna Enriquez. The exhibit will be curated by Toia-Vaas, Enriquez and AIB Co-chairs Beth Goldsmith and Yvette Richard.
The fundraiser portion of the event will include a silent auction and juried art show. The silent auction has been transitioned from the annual Sacred Hearts School Bazaar to this new event.
This new art and literature theme-based auction will have collections to bid on based on a book or art project a particular student group is working on. The sixth grade class enjoyed the book “The Giver,” and theirs will be a teen theme-based collection that includes movie tickets, teen facial, a hydro flask and other fun items that anyone can come and bid on. There will be at least eight unique collections that will make up the silent auction.
The juried art portion of this event is open to all young artists in elementary and middle school in West Maui. Children will have a chance to have their work displayed with prominent local artists. The work submitted by students will be juried by these local artists, and prizes will be awarded.
If your child is interested in participating in the juried show, grab an application in your school administrative office. The $25 submission fee, application and artwork (any medium 10″ by 10″ or smaller) are due by April 16 to the Sacred Hearts School office.
Admission is free and open to the entire community to attend. It will take place on April 16 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Mother Marianne Cope Hall at Sacred Hearts School.
Corporate sponsors and juried artists thus far include Ronaldo and Jennifer Macedo, Yita Wilson, Cynthia O’Neal-Monteleone, Carleton, Charlie Lyon, Andrew Miller, Belinda Leigh, Aydin Say, Jeanne Denton-Nelson, A Maui Handy Woman, Body in Balance, Zensation’s Spa, Haleakala Solar and Maui Technology Consultants.
If you are a patron of the arts and would like to be one of the juried artists or an AIB sponsor, contact Yvette Richard at yrichard@shsmaui.org or (808) 298-9679.
There will also be desserts prepared by Grand Wailea Executive Chef Ryan Urig, a dish by Kobe Japanese Steakhouse and Savory Brazillian Cheese Muffins by the Maui Sugar Shop Bakery.
