Maui County Ocean Safety Guide available online
WAILUKU – Thanks to a collaborative effort by county, state and federal officials, Maui County now has a comprehensive Ocean Safety Guide available online, so that anyone can easily download or print the important safety information.
The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation’s Ocean Safety Division, Department of Fire and Public Safety and Maui Police Department partnered with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and the U.S. Coast Guard to develop the content for the Ocean Safety Guide.
The brochure includes a map of county beach parks that have lifeguards, tips on how to deal with rip currents and shorebreaks, and how to avoid chance encounters with sharks.
“The beaches of Maui County are beautiful but not without dangers, as with any natural habitat,” said Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa.
“Most of our residents have learned how to respect the power of the ocean, and hopefully we can educate our visitors do the same. We encourage everyone to download and share this new safety guide to help communicate these important safety messages to all beach-goers.”
Maui County also encourages schools, service groups, non-profits and other organizations to distribute the safety guide for educational purposes.
Although the current brochure includes a map of the island of Maui, the county is working to develop Molokai- and Lanai-specific brochure templates as well.
The brochure can be viewed and downloaded at www.mauicounty.gov/ OceanSafety. The Maui County Ocean Safety Video is also available on the same webpage, as well on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=kudYTe0XDDQ.
