Maui Music Mission’s Summer Kickoff will be held on Monday, June 8, at Kamehameha Iki Park from 9 a.m. to noon. Enter to win a Makala ukulele and enjoy a free first lesson, potluck and performances. Maui Music Mission inspires hope through music with keiki ukulele lessons. The group meets on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. at Kamehameha Iki Park, and Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. at Na ‘Aikane o Maui Cultural Center at 562-A Front St. Call 463-7856 for more information.

Obon celebration set

LAHAINA – The first Obon dance of the season will be held at Lahaina Shingon Mission at 862 Luakini St. on Saturday, June 6.

A church service starts at 6:30 p.m., and dancing begins at 7:30 p.m.

The event will feature a mini bazaar with a variety of sushi, baked goods, pickled mangoes and vegetables, nishime, trail mix and more.

Food concessions will include chow fun, chili and rice, teriyaki meat, huli-huli chicken, laulau, Spam musubi, shave ice with Azuki beans and cold drinks.

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center last week announced the launch of “Saturdays in the Shade,” a free summer concert series. Co-sponsored by radio station Q103 FM, the series kicks off on June 6 featuring renowned reggae artists Inna Vision (above) with a 4 p.m. performance. The second date in the series is July 4, featuring performances by “American Idol” alumni Eli-Mac and Super Dub Tribe, among others. For information, visit www.Facebook.com/QueenKaahumanuCenter.

Huck graduates from Lehigh University

WEST MAUI – Sarafina Huck graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, on May 18, receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering, and minors in Business and Supply Chain Management.

Sarafina is moving to Washington, D.C., to work for Clark Construction at the end of the summer. Sarafina was a founding member of Lehigh University’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon. The event raises awareness and donations for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

John Fogerty will perform on Saturday, June 6, at 7 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s A&B Amphitheater. Grammy Award winner Fogerty is a true American treasure — one of popular music’s all-time greatest singers, guitar players and songwriters. He first earned massive popular and critical success as the leader of Creedence Clearwater Revival. After CCR, Fogerty embarked on an equally impressive solo career, with hits like “Rockin’ All Over The World,” “The Old Man Down The Road,” “Rock And Roll Girls” and “Centerfield.” Among his many other honors are induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She also earned the Spiegel Merit Award for her dependability, concern for others and commitment through everyday service to the university’s fitness center, where she was the supervising manager over the past year.

Sarafina graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy in 2011 as valedictorian. Her brother, Santana Huck, is attending Lehigh as well, majoring in Material Science Engineering.

Parents Erika and Markus Huck thanked the West Side community for their support and contributions to Sarafina’s success over the years. “We wish her all the best in her future and endeavors,” Erika concluded.

Smart Driver Class set

The Maui Film Festival 2015 is underway through June 10, featuring screenings at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and movie screenings and special events in Wailea. Visit http:// mauifilmfestival.com to see the full schedule.

LAHAINA – An AARP Smart Driver Class will be held at the West Maui Senior Center on Tuesday, June 9, from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

These classes are designed for drivers 50 years and older, but all adults are welcome to attend. The emphasis is to become more aware of common age-related physical changes, how they affect one’s driving ability and how to compensate.

The $20 fee (cash or check) will be collected at the beginning of the class. AARP members receive a $5 discount, so bring your card. Some insurance carriers offer discounts to those who complete this class. Pre-registration is requested. Call the West Maui Senior Center (788 Pauoa St.) at 661-9432.
