Maui Preparatory Academy joined schools from around the country to celebrate National Bike to School Day on May 6. Bike to School Day 2015 brought out 150 students, teachers and parents on bicycles, two and three wheels, motorized and manual, on their morning journey to school. This event kicks off Maui Prep’s initiative to improve traffic operations at the Honoapiilani Highway/Napilihau Street intersection, making travel to and from school — especially for pedestrians and bike riders — more safe. The event was Maui Prep’s first step in developing a Safe Routes to School Plan to improve infrastructure surrounding the school, reducing speeds and establishing safer crosswalks and pathways. The County of Maui, Hawaii Bicycling League and Maui Police Department all turned out to support Maui Prep’s efforts.

Event to pay tribute to service people

LAHAINA – The Maui Chapter of the U.S. Navy League will proudly sponsor the third annual “Salute To Our Service People” event on June 12 and 14.

Each year, dedicated members of the local Navy League chapter, with the assistance of patriotic owners of various maritime endeavors, get together to provide veterans with fun-filled ocean activities.

Active duty service people and all Maui County veterans are welcome to participate in sports fishing and/or a sunset sail on Queen’s Treasure, all at no cost.

This year, Start Me Up has joined the effort to provide a half-day charter, along with Maui Jim.

Kimo’s restaurant says mahalo to Lahaina’s educators during Teacher Appreciation Week. Every year, Kimo’s works with Lahainaluna High School parents to recognize and reward the educators and staff of LHS. A complimentary luncheon is hosted in honor of the teachers’ hard work and dedication to the youth of our community throughout the year. The parents coordinated prize giveaways for the educators, and Kimo’s provided a buffet that included Klassic Front Street Burgers and Hula Pie.

Keiki ukulele lessons offered

LAHAINA – Maui Music Mission inspires hope through music with keiki ukulele lessons.

McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii has hired Shannon Scott as marketing consultant for its Hawaii restaurants. Scott has more than 20 years of experience in Hawaii media. He most recently served as promotions director at Cox Radio Group, in addition to his many years as an on-air radio personality at KCCN-FM. Scott has also hosted Hawaii’s longest-running television concert series, “Heineken Hot Hawaiian Nights.”

The group meets on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. at Na ‘Aikane o Maui Cultural Center at 562A Front St., and Mondays at 2:15 p.m. at Kamehameha Iki Park next to 505 Front Street.

Kamp Kumulani set

NAPILI – Kamp Kumulani 2015 is coming to the Napilihau Reccreation Center for its 17th year on June 8-12 from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s free for keiki who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade.

Hawaiian independent artist Kawehi — known across the nation for her live shows as a “one-woman band” — will perform on Thursday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater. She creates intricate loops via beat-boxing, a guitar, midi keyboard and Ableton Live. Kawehi is known for her opinionated songwriting, centering her music messages around social issues and injustices. As an independent artist, Kawehi has taken to Kickstarter, raising funds for four releases, a live album, a documentary and U.S. national tour through crowd-funding alone — staying true to herself and her fans by making the kind of music she is proud of. Lahaina church to hold Vacation Bible School

LAHAINA – The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lahaina will hold “Everest,” a Vacation Bible School, on June 8-12 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Outlets of Maui hosts keiki hula shows every second and fourth Friday of the month from 5 to 5:45 p.m. The next performance date is May 22. All are invited to come and enjoy wonderful performances of traditional hula by the children of Na Pua O Kapi`olani, who are accompanied by a live band and led by Kumu Hula Kathy Ralar.

Keiki ages 3-12 will enjoy lots of fun activities: story time, music, games, movies, crafts, food and more.

Kakugawa to lead workshop on caregiving

KAHULUI – Author and educator Frances H. Kakugawa will conduct a series of book signings and presentations in May and June, speaking on how to revise our view of Alzheimer’s caregiving as a burden and instead see it as a gift.

Kakugawa travels the country speaking to health organizations, medical school programs, and caregiver and community groups about caring for loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s or other debilitating, long-term illnesses.

Her message: bringing dignity to the caregiving process makes the experience less stressful and more rewarding for both patient and caregiver.

Kakugawa also advocates the power of poetry and creative writing to help ease the demands of caregiving, and to allow the caregiver to come to terms with the emotions of the situation, thereby building a healthier relationship with the patient.

A Maui workshop will be held on Saturday, May 23, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Hale Mahaolu Elima Community Hall at 11 Mahaolu St. in Kahului.

Ride of Silence to raise awareness of safe driving

LAHAINA – The nonprofit Maui Bicycling League is holding a series of events this month to celebrate the 60th annual National Bike Month, which takes place each May across the United States.

MBL is a local chapter of the Hawaii Bicycling League.

On Saturday, May 23, the Ride of Silence will commemorate Kihei cyclst Karl Hagen, who was killed in 2014 by a pickup truck driver on Piilani Highway. The event serves to raise awareness about safe driving around cyclists.

The ride will take place at 9 a.m. starting at the entrance of the Mokulele Bike Pathway near Target. Riders will ride on the pathway to Kihei and back. Riders are asked to wear white and respectfully ride in silence. Visit www.mauibicyclingleague.org for information.

LHS to recognize the year’s top athletes

LAHAINA – The Lahainaluna High School Athletic Department is sponsoring the annual LHS Athletic Banquet & Awards Presentation on Thursday, May 21, at 5:30 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.

This event will recognize and award the outstanding student athletes of each sport for the 2014-15 school year. The highlight of the evening will be honoring the male and female athletes selected for the “Distinguished Senior Athlete,” “Scholar Athlete of the Year” and “Outstanding Athlete of the Year” awards.
