Halfway through the heat sitting in fourth position, Payne posted two near perfect rides to defeat Julian Wilson (Australia), Jeremy Flores (France) and Adam Melling (Australia). Winning the event put Payne in the lead of the VANS Triple Crown, boosted his ASP World Qualifying Series ratings and earned him $40,000 in prize money. LAHAINA – On Thursday, Nov. 20, Lahaina Restoration Foundation will welcome back the Kamehameha Schools Maui Hawaiian Ensemble for its free monthly concert in front of Baldwin Home Museum at the corner of Dickenson and Front streets in Lahaina.

A Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project Benefit Night is slated at Maui Brewing Company in Kahana Gateway Shopping Center on Friday, Nov. 28, from 6 to 10 p.m. Half of the pub profits from house beers sold will go toward protecting native birds. The Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project is dedicated to the conservation and research of rare and endangered bird species on Maui, including the kiwikiu (Maui parrotbill, pictured) found nowhere else in the world. Sacred Hearts School’s annual Breakfast with Santa will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. in the school’s cafeteria. Each child will get a chance to tell Santa his or her Christmas hopes and dreams, and take home a free photo taken with Mr. Claus himself.
