Cheerleaders raise money for other keiki

The performance tumblers put on an exhibition at Lahaina's Second Friday Town Party last month.

LAHAINA – Thirty-two girls who are part of Coach Sue Martin’s Tumble Performance Squad helped to raise $2,100 to benefit a special Pass it Forward Fundraising Gala held at last month’s Second Friday Town Party in Campbell Park.

The theme was “Fitness in Lahaina,” and the little tumblers set out to raise money for other children.

“Our goal was to fundraise, because we didn’t need to! We passed forward the proceeds from our ‘tumble-a-thon’ to others! The beneficiaries included 14 competitive cheerleaders who were from Lahaina and are training to compete nationally in 2015,” Martin noted.

A special contribution was made to Aileen Rodriguez, who is in her first year of college at San Diego State University and made it on to the Division 1A All-Star cheer squad. Now 18, Rodriguez first started tumbling with Martin when she was three years old.

Another local beneficiary, Courtney Ruidas from Lahainaluna High School, is a member of the Hawaii All-Star Team. She has been competing on the national level as a cheerleader since 2008.

Martin thanked Skyline Eco Adventures, Sea House Restaurant, Mala Restaurant, Honu, Captain Jacks, Cool Cat Cafe, Teddy’s Bigger Burgers and Ruby’s for contributing to the benefit.
