Kay

KAANAPALI – Norman Earl Kay, 92, passed away on July 22, 2014, at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

A local realtor and real estate investor, Kay was born on Oct. 4, 1921, in Wayne, Nebraska, the son of Charles De Kay and Martha Knutson De Kay.

The De Kay family originated in France, where the name was spelled “du Cais.” In America, the family had the legal name changed to De Kay.

In 1952, Norman, then a radio announcer, had his name legally changed to Kay.

In June 1939, Norman graduated from Simms High School in Fairfield, Montana, at 17. He attended Billings Business School in Montana and joined the National Guard.

In September 1940, the National Guard was mobilized, and Norman joined the Army at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was given a medical discharge after a piece of equipment fell and broke both of his feet.

Norman had a very active professional and social life. He was a member of the Real Estate Association of Maui and was still licensed as a real estate broker in California.

He was a member and former director at Waiola Church and a member of Lahaina Yacht Club.

He resigned last year as a director of the Fair Foundation, as a member of Pinehurst Golf & Country Club in North Carolina and as a member of the Royal Kaanapali Golf Club, where he was a past president.

Norman was formerly on the board of directors at Hale Ono Loa, where he had been an owner since 1970. He and his wife moved to Kaanapali in 1977.

He was owner and manager of the Lahaina Industrial Center until 2009.

In California, Norman was a member of the Sales & Marketing Association, San Diego Board of Realtors, California Escrow Association and the Del Mar Turf Club.

He worked in broadcasting and hosted a children’s radio program in which he was known as “Captain Kay.”

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margie Owens Kay; sons John Kay of San Antonio, Texas, Kevin Satterfield of Mission Viejo, California, Keith Satterfield (Pamela) of San Diego, California and Kerry Satterfield of Lahaina; daughter Karen Satterfield Kay Naber of Bloomington, Indiana; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He had a special place in his heart for granddaughters Jennifer Daniels of Le Mesa, CA, and Jamie Satterfield of Honolulu.

At Norman’s request, he was laid to rest at Valley Isle Memorial Park on Maui in a private service on July 24. He asked that friends and family honor him with treasured memories of all the love he had for everyone who was part of his life.
