Christopher graduated from Lanai High School in 2013 and is only the fourth person from Lanai to be accepted into the Coast Guard. Christopher is now stationed at the Umpqua River-Winchester Bay Life Boat Station on the Central Oregon coast. Three council candidates to appear together Tuesday

LAHAINA – Four days before the Aug. 9 primary election, the new Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset will sponsor the first joint public appearance by Ka’ala Buenconsejo, Elle Cochran and Rick Nava, candidates for the West Maui seat on the County Council.

The public is invited to attend the event on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 5:15 p.m. at the Royal Lahaina Resort’s Ocean Terrace in Kaanapali.

Each candidate will speak for three minutes and field questions covering a range of issues at random prepared by Rotarian and Lahaina News columnist Norm Bezane and others.

“We are planning to break new ground with our club by having speakers talk about Hawaiian culture as well as candidates for public office,” Co-president Liz May said.

“You’re never too old to learn.” There is still time to sign up for Peggy Robertson’s watercolor or pastel class called “Open Studio” at the West Maui Senior Center. The class starts Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon and runs for four weeks on Tuesdays. The fee, which includes supplies, is $45. Call 661-9432 before 4 p.m. to register.

“Rotary is about community,” and few people have as much impact on how a community develops than elected officials, she added.

Cochran is serving her second two-year term on the council after succeeding Jo Anne Johnson Winer.

Nava, the owner of Media Systems, and Buenconsejo, marketing director for Hoaloha Na Eha, the company that operates Old Lahaina Luau, Feast of Lele and restaurants, are in their first run for office.

Lahainaluna High School graduating senior Anna Tillman (pictured with presenter Jeff Rogers) recently received $1,000 as this year’s winner of the Kaanapali Land Management Corp. Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a Lahainaluna student planning to major in agriculture, engineering, architecture or a related field. Kaanapali Land Management hopes that its scholarship will help Anna achieve her goals as she attends the University of Arizona in the fall.

State DOT to discuss transportation program

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation will hold its second round of public information meetings to discuss the fiscally constrained draft of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for Fiscal Years 2015-2018 (+2).

The STIP is a four-year plan that identifies state and county transportation projects to be funded, in part, with Federal Highway and Transit Funds.

Fiscal constraint of the new STIP was done using technical information from management systems, project schedules and readiness information, and coordination with relevant public agencies and the public.

Survey results gathered from the first round of public meetings will be shared, along with information about next steps.

Maui Pearls took first place in the Lahaina Girls 14U Softball Invitational on July 18-20. Eleven teams from Maui, Molokai and Oahu competed. Second place went to Na Pua Ko, and third to Hawaiian Style (both Maui teams). KAHULUI – Maui Nui Botanical Gardens will host a kapa dye workshop on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Join kapa makers Lisa Schattenburg-Raymond and Lei Ishikawa to learn about the many Hawaiian plants that produce dyes for kapa.

LAHAINA – As part of Holy Innocents Church’s guest organist program, Jane Holstein of Hope Publishing will play at the 8:30 a.m. service on Sunday, Aug. 3.

Holy Innocents is located at 561 Front St., just south of King Kamehameha III School.

Holstein is an arranger, choral clinician, organist, worship planner and concert artist who resides in Wheaton, Illinois, with her husband, David L. Weck.

As a gifted concert organist, Holstein has joined forces with Joel Raney for a series of duo-concerts featuring the piano and organ in an innovative keyboard excursion, exploring a variety of styles in sacred and classical music.
