Sievanen to share results of reef survey
LAHAINA – Declining fish abundance and coral reefs – that’s what more than half of West Side respondents said that they are concerned about in a recent survey that measured perceptions of coastal resource users in West Maui.
Do these perceptions match your own? Do they match what scientists know? What is being done to address these concerns?
Join Dr. Leila Sievanen, an anthropologist based at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center in Honolulu, on May 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Kaunoa Senior Center in Lahaina. She will present responses from surveys administered to 200 people focused on coral reef conditions, threats to the reef and what should be done to address these issues.
Other findings include perceived declines across all resources (fish abundance, coral reef conditions, fish diversity, water quality, monk seal resting, sea turtle nesting, watershed conditions and public facilities).
When asked about threats to coral reefs, the majority of respondents were concerned about invasive species and shoreline development. Learn more at this event, which is free and open to the public.

Tobi Bonifacio and Christian Balagso were crowned Lahainaluna High School’s Junior Prom queen and king at their April 19 formal event at the Sheraton Maui. The announcement of the court with its coronation preceded a buffet dinner, dancing and photo sessions. The class opted to formally announce the king and queen and the court on the night of prom without the traditional prom court dance. The ballroom was decorated with a masquerade theme and was chaired by Shanel Michela Santos with assistance from class President Annika Maulit. The prom planning committee was advised by Colleen Ireland and Daniel Schultz with assistance from Student Activities Coordinator Art Fillazar. PHOTO BY ART FILLAZAR.
