Students to rid beaches of cigarette butts

On Sunday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon in multiple locations, students from all Maui County high schools will be combing the beaches of our islands in search of cigarette butts.

In partnership with the Maui District Student Council Organization, Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii, Sustainable Coastlines, Surfrider Foundation, and Community Work Day/Malama Maui Nui, this event is a chance for students and adults to take care of Maui, and to document precisely how cigarette butts are infiltrating Maui beaches.

“After the cleanups, we’ll rendezvous at the County Administration Building in Wailuku at 1 p.m. to count our cigarette butts together. This is grassroots, student-driven activism, with an eye on using this information to educate the public and the County Council on the number one item found at beach cleanups: cigarette butts. This is a one-time action intended to shape positive policy that will minimize the presence of cigarette butts on county parks and beaches,” wrote Andrew O’Riordan, student activities coordinator at Maui Preparatory Academy.

Cleanups will occur at Hookipa Beach Park, Baldwin Beach to Paia Bay, Kaanapali Beach, Olowalu Beach, Sugar Beach, Po’olenalena Beach and Waiehu Beach Park. Volunteers will be onsite with gloves and jars for butt collection.

Quatuor Ebène will perform on Friday, Jan. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater. Hailed by The New York Times as “one of the standout quartets of the new generation,” France’s Ebène Quartet features four talented string players who aren't afraid to stretch beyond the boundaries of classical music. Distinguished by its youth, open-mindedness and versatility, the quartet has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the top. Tickets are $40 (half price for kids 12 and under); call 242-SHOW.

Maui author to hold book signing events

KIHEI – Author Susan Michele Moll of Kihei will be available to sign copies of her book, “The Magical Princess,” at two book signings.

The events are slated for Jan. 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Awakening in Paradise in the Long’s Shopping Center at 1215 South Kihei Road, and Jan. 18 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Maui Friends of the Library at 300 South Puunene Avenue in Kahului.

“The Magical Princess” is an inspiring children’s story that takes place on Maui and introduces some Hawaiian language.

It is about a princess and a grumpy old woman called Bella, who becomes the princess’ ally after magically transforming while sitting on the garden wall simply observing the princess.

Bella visits the princess, and they begin their adventure by inviting parents and children to tea parties, to play games, share ideas and by spreading the spirit of aloha to their community.

They strive to live better lives, helping birth a bright and beautiful New Earth.
