LAHAINA – Lahainaluna High School sophomore Dean Kazuyuki Okura Kirkegaard recently completed the Kumon Reading Program.

Dean, who is also active in cross country, soccer and tennis, credited his mom for keeping him motivated throughout his Kumon studies. He hopes to one day become an engineer or pilot.

From fairy tales to Shakespeare, Dean completed all 21 study levels of the Kumon Reading Program, which cover everything from learning letter sounds to reading high school-level literary texts.

Kumon, an after-school supplemental program, was founded in Osaka, Japan, in 1954. It is now available in 47 countries, helping millions of children succeed in the classroom and in life.

The Kumon Method empowers children to become self-learners.
