U.H. Lahaina Education Center to offer 15 classes

By Staff | Nov 7, 2013

LAHAINA – The University of Hawaii Maui College’s spring 2014 semester starts on Jan. 13, and registration will begin next week.

The Lahaina Education Center will once again offer 15 courses through the Hawaii Interactive Television System (HITS).

Students from all over Maui County attend classes simultaneously from various Education Center or studio locations – Lahaina, Hana, Molokai, Lanai and Kahului – utilizing microphones, cameras and other technology to achieve a “real time” classroom experience.

Generally, the HITS instructor is at the main campus, and the course is broadcast to the smaller centers. However, in spring 2014, Lahaina Outreach Coordinator Marti Wukelic will teach MKT 160 (Advertising & Promotion) live, from Lahaina, and it will be broadcast to other sites. If this pilot program is successful, it will clear the way for other HITS courses to originate live from Lahaina.

Some of the other broadcast offerings will be Hawaiian Mythology, Principles of Business, Introduction to Youth Practitioner, Guidance for Children in Group Settings, World History II and Introduction to Human Services. Various English courses will be offered as well. As always, the developmental courses Math 18 and Math 82 will be available in Lahaina with instructor Dianne Lagbas.

Additionally, U.H. Maui College will offer a variety of Internet- and cable television-based courses.

For more information, call the U.H. Maui College Lahaina Education Center at 662-3911, e-mail westmaui@ hawaii.edu or follow Lahaina Education Center on Facebook for up-to-date information.

The center is located at 60 Kenui St. in the Front Street Apartment complex.
