Group to plant native plants at Hanakao’o Beach

LAHAINA – West Maui Kumuwai will coordinate a Hanakao’o Beach Park Native Planting on Sunday, June 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“Together, we’ll plant hundreds of natives to reduce erosion into the Wahikuli Gulch, protect our ocean and beautify this historic site,” the group explained.

Meet at the parking lot next to the Hanakao’o Cemetery. Bring gloves, garden tools, sunscreen and a water bottle. Breakfast, lunch and giveaways will be provided for volunteers.

According to the group, “West Maui Kumuwai is a movement aimed at protecting our ocean through personal action and community collaboration. We believe that if we all do a little, we can do a lot. Get ready for more events and happenings soon!”

The Rotary Club of Lahaina recently recognized May Fujiwara as the “Outstanding Volunteer Person of the Year” in the West Maui community for 2012-13. The award was presented by Rotarian Joseph Pluta.

Exhibit features rare photos of Dr. Sun Yat-sen

KAHULUI – An exhibit of more than 100 rare photographs of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, known as the Father of Modern China, will make its first-ever appearance in the U.S. on Maui during the month of June.

A forum will be held Monday, June 3, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the University of Hawaii Maui College Ike Le’a Building Lecture Hall. There will be speakers from Zhongshan University and the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Research Association, China.

Lahaina Intermediate School recently held its third quarter Renaissance Partners In Living and Learning Lahaina Pizza Company Beach Bash at Launiupoko Beach Park. Event organizer Todd Hayase stated that 216 LIS students qualified for the reward day of games and a pizza luncheon as a result of academic achievement, citizenship and community service. The organizing staff for the event included Becky Altier, Tom Norton, Kiera Regan, Charmaine Ganer, Donovan Seno, Lori Koyama, Cindy Koyama and Daryl Munetake. “We congratulate all the qualifiers for this reward day and thank Jerry Kunitomo and VIP Produce for helping us put on this event for the students,” said Hayase. Earn a high school diploma

KAHULUI – McKinley Community School for Adults-Maui Campus provides programs for individuals to earn a Hawaii Adult Community School Diploma.

Airman Justin Shields, who graduated from Lahainaluna High School in 2011, and Airman Chelsea Shields, who graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy in 2010, were married in 2011. Justin graduated from boot camp on March 2, 2012 and tech training on April 22, 2012. Chelsea graduated from boot camp Oct. 26, 2012 and tech training on Jan. 11, 2013. They are stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, South Dakota. Justin is a crew chief on B-1 bombers and Chelsea serves in traffic management. Justin’s father is Morgan Shields of Lahaina, and Chelsea’s father and step-mom are Chuck and Patty Johnson of Lahaina. Chelsea’s mom is Toni Johnson of Lahaina.

The summer schedule, beginning on June 17 and ending on July 17, will offer classes in Basic Skills, GED Preparation and the Competency Based Diploma program, and English as a Second Language. Fall semester classes will begin on Aug. 13.

McKinley Community School for Adults’ Maui Campus is located in Kahului. The entrance to the school is on Kane Street across from Sears. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; call 873-3082. Some programs are available in Lahaina, Hana and Molokai.

Office on Aging relocates to Cameron Center

WAILUKU – The Maui County Office on Aging, Aging and Disability Resource Center has moved from One Main Plaza to its new offices at the J. Walter Cameron Center, 95 Mahalani St., Room 22, in Wailuku. The relocation took place April 1.

More than 15 volunteers spent four days and contributed over 93 hours during Habitat for Humanity’s sixth annual National Women Build Week. Volunteers helped with demolition work and painting (to prepare for plumbing and electrical upgrades) before renovation work can continue. Lowe’s has served as the underwriter for the national program since 2004, conducting “how-to” clinics and providing gift cards to participating program affiliates. To volunteer, call 242-1140.

Executive on Aging Deborah Arendale said, “We are here to help with a variety of aging-related questions and concerns, including adult day care, adult day care respite and attendant care, chore services, home-delivered meals, transportation and legal assistance.”

The site features a webpage that connects to developments/projects in each district, as well as information to contact county and state offices/departments.

Summer Reading Programs slated

LAHAINA – Readers of all ages are invited to participate in the 2013 Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) Summer Reading Programs from June 2 through July 6.

Registration for the free five-week programs at public libraries began Tuesday, May 28.

Pop Warner Football registration slated

LAHAINA – Lahaina Chiefs Football and Cheerleading registration will be held on Sunday, June 2, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Lahaina Recreation Center near the football field.

The programs are open to all kids ages 5-15.

Obon dance set

LAHAINA – The first Obon dance of the season will be held at Lahaina Shingon Mission, 862 Luakini St., on Saturday, June 1.

A service starts at 6:30 p.m., and the dancing will begin at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a mini bazaar with a variety of sushi, baked goods, pickled mangoes, tsukemono, nishime and more, along with food concessions with chow fun, teriyaki beef, chili and rice, Spam musubi, shave ice and cold drinks.

Social Media Bootcamp slated

KIHEI – High Tech Maui’s popular Social Media Bootcamp, led by well-known consultant Peter Liu of Kaiscapes LLC, is set for Saturday, June 8.

If you’re new to social media, or starting to think about an overall social media strategy for your business but don’t know where to start putting all the pieces together, this workshop is for you.

The event is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Maui Economic Development Board’s Malcolm Center at 1305 N. Holopono St., Suite 5, in Kihei. The cost is $65, which includes lunch.
