Lahaina CrossFit on Aug. 4 held a contest based on five events: maximum deadlift, tire flip, prowler push, bench press and farmers’ walk. There were 30 competitors and around 100 spectators. “We often run events like this, but this was the most diverse crowd, which included several people from all over the island. It was also a food drive for Feed My Sheep Foundation. Our gym is striving to be a positive influence in this community,” noted owner Anthony Bianucci.

Maui Democrats to honor U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka

MAKENA – The Maui Democratic Party on Wednesday, Aug. 29, will host a special dinner event to honor U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka.

“For more than three decades, Senator Akaka has worked tirelessly for the people of Hawaii. His extensive contributions towards helping veterans and their families, protecting the rights of Native Hawaiians, strengthening education and supporting Social Security have made the people of Hawaii proud,” noted Todd Craine, chair of the Maui Democratic Party.

“Senator Akaka’s voice in Congress on the stewardship of our environment deeply reflects Hawaii’s values of malama ‘aina and kuleana – values that are rooted in his own heritage and embraced by the people of Maui.”

The event will be held at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort with a luau dinner and show beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will feature a special presentation to Sen. Akaka.

Augie T’s “Summer of LOL” with guest Jose Dynamite is set for Friday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater. Hawaii’s popular comedian and on-air personality Augie T brings his hilarious local humor to the stage this summer for a night of laugh-out-loud fun. Special guest is Dynamite, who has been performing stand-up in Hawaii for eight years. His humor is described as “a mix of dumb haole with obscure observations.” Tickets are $20; $35 premium tickets include a meet and greet. Call 242-SHOW.

Lahainaluna to hold Parent Information Night

LAHAINA – Information on college and career preparation will be offered for Lahainaluna High School senior level parents and families at the school library on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m.

Information on SAT and ACT tests, college applications, letters of recommendation and transcript request procedures will be covered along with other tips and strategies to prepare for college or to pursue a career.

Maui Fire Department recently announced that Timothy Herrick was promoted to Firefighter II Hazardous Materials Specialist. He has been with the department for ten years, having spent time at the Wailea, Lahaina and Kahului Fire Stations. His promotion took effect on Aug. 16, and Herrick will be assigned to HM-10 “C” Watch at the Kahului Fire Station. According to MFD, “Timothy is a key member of our team and is an outstanding example of the caliber of firefighters we have serving our community.”

Lahaina Gateway to host ‘Classique Summer Night’

LAHAINA – Miss the international excitement of the Olympics? Come to Lahaina Gateway on Saturday, Aug. 25, for their “Classique Summer Night” – great shopping and dining, classic cars and a cool Paris outdoor movie, too.

Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Hawaii Golf and Tennis will hold summer sales throughout the store.

At 11 a.m. at Barnes and Noble, parents and children ages four and up are invited to the “Klutz Explore the Galaxy Hands-On Learning” event.

From 6 to 9 p.m., check out vintage rides by Maui Classic Cruisers; join them by Teddy’s Bigger Burgers.

From 7:15 to 9:15 p.m., the Outdoor Movie Night will feature Martin Scorsese’s 2011 Paris adventure film that won five Academy Awards. It’s about an orphaned boy who secretly lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station. It’s rated PG. Seating is provided for 100 on a first-come, first-served basis. Beach chairs are allowed; no coolers or outside food.

Social Media Bootcamp coming to West Maui

HONOKOWAI – High-Tech Maui’s popular Social Media Bootcamp led by consultant Peter Liu of Kaiscapes LLC is coming to West Maui for the first time on Saturday, Aug. 25, Maui Economic Development Board Inc. announced.

Donkin to perform on library lawn

LAHAINA – Pam Donkin, an award-winning singer and songwriter, will present two free performances at Maui public libraries next week.

Children accompanied by a parent or caregiver are invited to attend these interactive musical programs: Aug. 29, 10 a.m., “Love to Sing” at the Lahaina Public Library lawn for children ages 2-8; and Aug. 30, 10:30 a.m., “A Hop, a Skip and a Jump” at Kihei Public Library for toddlers and preschoolers.

Donkin, A Gentle Wind recording artist, will lead songs, chants, finger plays and movement activities that help with reading-readiness, bonding and musical response.

LAHAINA – Lahaina Youth Fastpitch Softball Inc. seeks volunteers to serve on its 2012-13 board.

The Lahaina Girls have teams in five divisions from ages 5-14.
