Firefighters battle Lahaina brushfires

LAHAINA – On Wednesday, June 6, at 11:56 p.m., firefighters responded to a brushfire at 871 Lahainaluna Road across from Lahaina Intermediate School.

Crews had the 2,500-square-foot fire under control by 12:16 a.m. and extinguished at 12:57 a.m.

At 11:57 p.m. the same day, firefighters responded to another brushfire – approximately 500 square feet in size – near Papalaua Street along Honoapiilani Highway. The fire was under control by 12:17 a.m. and extinguished at 12:34 a.m.

According to Maui Fire Department, “Both fires are very suspicious because of the time and proximity. There were no witnesses, and investigation did not find any devices.”

Then on Saturday, June 9, at 3:04 p.m., firefighters responded to a brushfire at 60 Kenui St. next to Lahaina Cannery Mall.

Approximately four acres burned. The fire was called contained at 7:44 p.m.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. There were no damages reported and no reported injuries.

Goodfellow Brothers, West Maui Land and Maui County Public Works assisted with fighting Saturday’s brushfire.
