Families celebrate National Read Across America Day at resort

In celebration of “National Read Across America Day,” The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas hosted a special reading session with Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa as special guest reader.
KAANAPALI – Resort guests were treated to a special reading session by Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa at The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas on March 2.
The event was organized by the resort for the second consecutive year in celebration of National Read Across America Day, which falls on March 2 and coincides with the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel).
An avid reader himself, Mayor Arakawa was happy to participate in the event that encourages children to read.
Families sat on a lauhala mat spread on the lawn grounds and enjoyed listening to Mayor Arakawa as he read Dr. Seuss’ “Ten Apples Up On Top!” and “Dr. Seuss’ ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book!”
The children chuckled as Arakawa played up the scenes in the stories. Upon popular request, the mayor read a third book, “The Cat In The Hat.”
At the end of the reading session, every child received a coloring activity book depicting the characters in Dr Seuss’ books.
Resort General Manager Angela Nolan said the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas makes keiki and children’s educational programs a priority.
“We are truly honored to have Mayor Arakawa join us in today’s reading session in celebration of National Read Across America Day. This is one the many activities we are actively involved within the community, as it solidifies our commitment,” said Nolan.
