LAHAINA – Have you ever felt like creating a story, poem or song about your mother and watching it on stage?

Men, women and children from East and West are invited to submit their works for the annual staged reading of “My Mama Monologues.”

The deadline this year has been extended to Feb. 1.

“My Mama Monologues” is an annual staged reading held at multiple locations in Hawaii and elsewhere around Mother’s Day weekend in May.

Stories and poems are read, songs sung and digital stories shown. Representing mothers from around the world, contributions are a mouth-watering potluck of spicy, hot, sweet, bittersweet, sour, sticky and ticklish flavors.

The audience is given tissues at the door for tears of sadness and laughter.

“My Mama Monologues” (MMM) playwright Pat Masumoto is also an artist, spoken-word poet and musician.

She was inspired to create the production as a 100th birthday gift to her mother, Florence Hasegawa of Lahaina, who is a teller of stories… and a choice subject of many good ones.

After being awarded Maui County’s “Outstanding Older American Woman of the Year,” Hasegawa retired at 100 as a Hawaii State marriage license agent. She is now a spry 103.

Contributing authors who are selected can expect to have their stories edited to suit the format of “MMM.” They may choose to be credited or remain anonymous.
