LAHAINA – Gardening has proven to be a dependable hobby during these challenging economic times. According to the Home Gardening Support Network, more people are expressing a desire to grow their own food using sustainable and ecologically responsible means.
Lahaina residents have expressed a desire to learn more about gardening, so the network is offering classes at Lahaina Civic Center (in the small room) on Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m.
Cosponsored by the county Department of Parks and Recreation, the classes will provide home gardeners with the tools to make the right environmental decisions for ecologically sustainable landscapes.
Classes will be led by Home Gardening Support Network Founder and CEO Anne Gachuhi, a horticulturist and former University of Hawaii Extension agent and Maui Master Gardener coordinator.
Slated for 2 to 4 p.m., the lineup includes “Starting a Vegetable Garden” on Jan. 11, “Garden Bugs: Five Major Pests of Vegetables” on Jan. 18, “Five Major Diseases of Vegetables” on Jan. 25, “Pruning Made Easy” on Feb. 8 and “Organic Gardening Techniques” on Feb. 15.
A fee of $15 per class is required to cover costs. Register for all five classes and pay $60 instead of $75.
