LAHAINA – Rev. Tetsuo Unno will be the featured speaker at the Maui Hongwanji Council’s Nembutsu Seminar at Lahaina Hongwanji Mission this weekend.

Open to the public, the day-and-a-half-long seminar will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, followed by the finale on Sunday, Nov. 20, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the 551 Wainee St. mission.

Unno will speak on the topic of “Buddhism on the Cause of Dukkha (Suffering) and the Way Leading to its Cessation” in five sessions.

A popular lecturer at U.S. colleges and Buddhist temples, Rev. Unno completed religious studies at U.C. Berkeley, Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Tokyo University and UCLA.

He is renowned for his knowledge of Buddhism, humor and wealth of experience.

Dukkha is an important theme central to Buddhism in general, according to the council. Many of the sutras in popular use today refer to dukkha as an outcome of everyday living.

Its cause – although easy to identify – may prove difficult for many to overcome. Shakyamuni Buddha’s teachings focused on suffering as the basis of Buddhist philosophy.

Registration for the seminar is $15 for adults and $10 for students. Lunch and snacks will be served both days.
