Group to stage protest

By Staff | Oct 13, 2011

KIHEI – Millions Against Monsanto Hawaii members on Maui will stage a protest vigil in front of Monsanto offices in Kihei from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Oct. 16, in support of the global World Food Day actions.

Recently, the Maui County Council heard testimony on a bill to require mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). If passed by county councils statewide, the measure will be included in the Hawaii State Association of Counties’ legislative package for the upcoming session.

The Maui group supports the “Right2Know” food labeling bill and further calls on Monsanto “to end the illusion of GMOs feeding the world, to end open field testing of GMOs, and to stop its use of arable lands for seed crops with which to exploit farmers worldwide with patented seeds.”
