Group to discuss Maui’s forest birds
MAKAWAO — “Maui’s Native Forest Birds,” a free presentation by the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, will be held at Makawao Public Library on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m.
Staff members from the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project will share information about the ecological history of the Hawaiian Islands, and how animals and plants arrived in the islands and evolved by adapting to certain factors in the environment.
They will also discuss why many birds on Maui have become extinct, and why the project’s focus is now on saving the Maui Parrotbill (Kiwikiu), which is listed as critically endangered.
Makawao Public Library and the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project are sponsoring this program for adults. Makawao Public Library is located at 1159 Makawao Avenue. For more information, call the library at 573-8785 or project at 573-0280.
