Lahaina News writers win SPJ awards
LAHAINA — Lahaina News writers won two first place awards in the Society of Professional Journalists Hawaii Chapter’s 2010 Excellence in Journalism Awards.
The award ceremony was held Friday on Oahu. Some 354 entries were judged by members of the Greater Oregon Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
In the Nondaily Newspaper General News/Enterprise Reporting category, Editor Mark Vieth took first place with “West Maui Health Alliance plans to regroup.”
In the Nondaily Community Reporting contest, Louise Rockett placed first for “Despite challenges, Kahana Door of Faith Church going strong.”
Trisha Smith of the Maui Weekly was a finalist in the Community Reporting category for “Civil Unions Undecided.” She was also a finalist in feature writing for “Roi Roundup 2010.”
