Volunteers needed for 2011 SBS Championship
KAPALUA — Volunteers are sought for the 2011 SBS Championship golf tournament at The Plantation Course at Kapalua.
“As an SBS Championship volunteer, you play a vital role in the success of the tournament,” said Nancy Cross, tournament director.
“We are inviting volunteers to sign up now, so we can assemble a strong volunteer team for the season-opening event of the PGA Tour season.”
The winner’s only PGA Tour event will be held Jan. 3-9, 2011.
Various volunteer duties include marshals that provide crowd control, admissions, Shotlink and drivers for on-road and on-course transportation.
“In addition to giving back to the community and watching the most elite golfers on the tour, volunteers receive many other benefits,” said Cross.
“We are looking for reliable people that can work a minimum of three shifts during the tournament.”
Lee and Ann Ahlbrecht are volunteer chairs in charge of approximately 97 volunteers that transport golfers, spectators and media on the course at the tournament.
“This is a great way to meet other interesting people on Maui and benefit the community,” said Ann. “People come from all over the United States to volunteer, and they are gems to work with. The volunteers take ownership of their duties and are dedicated to making the event a success.”
Volunteers that work five or more shifts receive a hat, tournament shirts and two complimentary rounds of golf at Kapalua Resort’s Bay Course.
Champions from this year’s PGA Tour events qualify for the season-opening SBS Championship event. Early qualifiers include defending two-time champion Geoff Ogilvy, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Adam Scott and Anthony Kim.
“Since the Tournament of Champions moved to Maui in 1999, the host organization has distributed nearly $3.5 million to local non-profits and community organizations. The support of the community is crucial to continuing this effort,” Cross concluded.
