Pitch in to beautify Maui

By Staff | Jul 15, 2010

Tiare Lawrence took these photos of Nene at Olowalu over the Fourth of July weekend. She noted, “My auntie, Matilda Nahooikaika, passed away a few weeks ago. She is from Olowalu and was part of the family that lost their home in Olowalu to the fire a few years ago. Anyhow, the amazing thing is that since she has passed, there have been several Nene birds making landfall in Olowalu on her land... But my family who live there said they have been coming and are regulars.”

PUUNENE — Does litter bug you? Community Work Day Program (CWD) on Saturday, July 17, will give you a chance to do something about it.

Join state and county agencies, local businesses, schools and community organizations to help remove litter from Maui Nui’s environment in the “Litter Bugs Me Cleanup, Freecycle It Day and Paint Exchange Event.”

From 8:30 a.m. to around noon on July 17, volunteers throughout Maui County will clean and beautify highways, parks, harbors, beaches, historic sites and “Adopt-a-Sites.” Projects are slated in West Maui — including Honolua Bay — and in each district.

Join a project or start your own. CWD will provide free supplies: litter grabbers, trash bags, vests, gloves and even paint and supplies for graffiti removal. For information, call Community Work Day Program at 877-2524.

That same day, CWD will hold a Paint Exchange and “Freecycle It” Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its headquarters along Hansen Road near the old Puunene High School.

Join fellow community members for this free garage sale-style event that helps keep usable household items out of the landfill. Bring your items and usable paint to CWD Headquarters by Friday, July 16, at 4 p.m.

Items will be offered for reuse at no charge during the “Freecycle” event.
