Workshop to cover solar and wind power systems

By Staff | Jan 7, 2010

On Sunday, Dec. 20, the Maui Harley Owners Group (HOG) participated in the annual Toys for Tots Run along with hundreds of other motorcycle riders. This annual event, sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps, distributes toys at Christmas time to needy children throughout Maui through the Salvation Army. HOG provided a $200 donation to the Toys for Tots event and two bicycles to local children at Wailuku Community Center. The Wailuku toy collection and event was sponsored in part by Harvest Chapel Church and the West Maui Lions Club. There were hundreds of donated toys to give away, and equally as many needy people eager to receive them. Photo by Steven Sullivan.

HAIKU — The workshop “How to Build Solar Power and Wind Power Systems” will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Haiku.

Learn how solar and wind power systems can run your home and how to save thousands of dollars when setting up a power system.

See how to set up photovoltaic solar panels and how to wire them to produce power. Determine how much power is available and how to adapt your home to become more energy efficient.

A colorful slide show will survey various types of wind turbines.

This class will be held on an independent farm in Haiku, so participants can actually see the systems producing power.

Instructor Steve Blake has built and lived on independent power for decades. Space is limited; the workshop price is $125 at the door or $100 in advance.
