Program provides books for students

By Staff | Nov 19, 2009

LAHAINA — Book Trust Advisory Board members Karen Quill and Jill Schatz recently spoke before the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise. They detailed how the group’s Maui program provides 50,000 brand new books to nearly 2,900 students in 20 schools throughout the county each year.

“This is the only program of its kind I know of that reaches every child,” Quill said.

The books are chosen by the children with the aid of 359 participating teachers. Each child gets a $7 line of credit each month of the school year to purchase books through Scholastic Magazine’s publishing program.

The nonprofit Book Trust is financed by contributions from foundations, individuals and the community. A $70 contribution provides one student a book a month for ten months For information, contact Debbie Fitts, Book Trust’s Maui coordinator, at (808) 298-1225 or e-mail dfitts@booktrust.org.
