Americorps NCCC Team Gold One, a national service organization for young adults, is helping out at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Maui for the next three months.

Gold One, an AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) Pacific Region Team consisting of ten young adults from all across the United States, will be assisting with mentoring and child development at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Maui is a series of clubhouses across the island dedicated to inspiring and enabling all young people, especially those who need it most, to realize their full potential to become productive, responsible and caring citizens.

In order to assist the organization, Gold One will be providing maintenance to clubhouses, including minor electrical work, gardening, painting and building storage sheds. Gold One will also assist the youth of the clubhouses directly by providing mentoring, educational programs as well as sports and art classes.

Sabrina Craven, a corps member on Gold One, said, “I’m excited to get the chance to learn more about youth development and more about the culture of the people I’m serving.”

AmeriCorps NCCC (pronounced “N-triple-C”) is a full-time, residential, national service program in which up to 1,700 young adults serve nationwide each year.

During their ten-month term, Corps Members – all 18-24 years old – work on teams of eight to 12 on projects that address critical needs.

Traditional NCCC members work on a variety of different six- to 12-week-long projects related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, energy conservation and urban and rural development.

The Pacific Region campus in Sacramento, CA, is one of four regional hubs in the nation and serves ten states in the western parts of the country. The other campuses are located in Vinton, Iowa; Vicksburg, Mississippi; and Denver, Colorado.

In exchange for their service, corps members receive $6,195 to help pay for college, or to pay back existing student loans. Other benefits include a small living stipend, room and board, travel, leadership development, increased self-confidence and the knowledge that through active citizenship, people can indeed make a difference.

AmeriCorps NCCC is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The corporation improves lives, strengthens communities and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering.
