Safeway celebrates grand opening of new store in Kahului

By Staff | Aug 1, 2019

The new Safeway store is the anchor tenant in the Hookele Shopping Center, developed by Alexander and Baldwin and located at the intersection of Hookele Street and Hana Highway.

KAHULUI – Safeway opened a new store on Wednesday, July 24, at the new Hookele Shopping Center in Kahului. This is the fourth Safeway location on Maui, and a new Safeway fuel station is scheduled to open at the site in the fall.

In addition to the new Kahului store, the other Safeway grocery stores on Maui are in Kihei, Lahaina and Wailuku.

Located near Kahului Airport, the 57,000-square-foot store features a variety of fresh offerings, local products and prepared food items, including sushi and Asian hot foods.

Customers can choose from hundreds of organic, natural and healthier-for-you choices, including fresh-cut fruit and vegetables. The store will also have a Starbucks, pharmacy and an in-store Bank of Hawaii branch.

“We’re excited to open a new Safeway in Central Maui,” said George Glukfeld, Hawaii general manager.

“This is an ideal location being next to the Kahului Airport. We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to our new store.”

The new store replaces the Kahului Safeway on East Kamehameha Avenue, which closed on July 20. The new store, led by Store Director Davin Kinoshita, will be open 24 hours a day and employ over 150 team members; approximately half of the employees are from the previous store.

On July 24, Safeway hosted a private blessing at the new store, followed by a brief program with check presentations from the Safeway Foundation to King Kekaulike High School, Maui Food Bank and Pacific Cancer Foundation.

Safeway is one of the most well-recognized grocery retail brands with a long-standing reputation for quality and service, proudly serving Hawaii since 1963.

The company operates 22 stores on Hawaii Island, Oahu, Kauai and Maui. Safeway is a division of Albertsons Companies.
