WAILUKU – The Maui County Planning Department is inviting public comments on proposed revisions to the county’s parking code.

The changes are based on feedback the department has received from property and business owners who have struggled to meet some of the outdated and inapplicable requirements that are in effect today.

Consistent with modern planning principles, the changes are predominantly more lenient, provide greater flexibility and are easier to understand and administer, according to the county.

In a few instances, though, the changes would increase the parking requirement for a few specific uses that typically have inadequate parking, such as large single-family homes.

On Wednesday, Feb. 28, the department will hold a public meeting to present and discuss these proposed changes and to answer any questions from the public.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m. in the Planning Conference Room in the Kalana Pakui Building at 250 South High St. in Wailuku.

After the public meeting, the department will finalize the bill, which has to be reviewed by the Maui, Lanai and Molokai planning commissions before being transmitted to the Maui County Council for adoption.

“These are long overdue revisions, and we hope to have strong support from the community, property and business owners, the three planning commissions and the council,” said Planning Director Will Spence.

“No one is happy with the code as it is today.”
