LAHAINA – Barry Rosenfeld will speak on the joys of creating the Rotary float for the annual Tournament of Roses Parade at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 7 a.m. at the Pioneer Inn. The public is invited, and the $10 fee includes a hearty breakfast with menu choices.

The Rose Bowl Parade was started by members of a local hunting club in 1890 to showcase California’s mild winters. Rotary has entered a float in the parade every year since 1980.

This is a floral parade, and all floats – which in the final weeks are built in air-conditioned warehouses – are covered with thousands of flowers and other organic materials.

Over 500 volunteers work on the Rotary float, which won the Princess Award in 2017 for most beautiful float under 35 feet. The theme for this year’s float is “Planting the Seeds of Service.”

Rosenberg is chairman of the Parade Participant Committee and also sits on the Rotary Parade Float Committee.

The parade is viewed by 70 million people worldwide and attended by over 700,000 people. Rotary shares its message of “Service Above Self” globally through its participation in the parade.

Lahaina is home to three Rotary Clubs. Weekly meetings are held at 7 a.m. on Tuesday at the Pioneer Inn. Royal Lahaina Resort hosts meetings at noon on Thursday and the first, third and fifth Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Visitors are always welcome. More information can be found online.
