Downs to discuss sunscreen pollution

By Staff | Nov 9, 2017

MAALAEA – Maui Ocean Center’s free Sea Talk series continues on Monday, Nov. 13, with “The Ingredients of Sunscreen Pollution and the threat to Hawaii’s Coral Reefs” by Dr. Craig Downs.

Sunscreen pollution and its impact to coral reefs and other marine and freshwater ecosystems is a major concern. In Hawaii, it is a threat to the well-being and survival of many coral reefs, but especially to coral reefs that have particular value to the tourism industry. The more swimmers that visit a reef, the greater the potential impact to that reef.

Dr. Downs will talk about the levels of sunscreen chemicals, like oxybenzone, around Maui’s waters and swimming pools, as well as the toxicity of these UV chemicals to marine organisms such as coral, sea urchins and fish.

The talk will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Seating is limited; call 270-7075 or e-mail info@mauioceancenter.com to register.
