County names new Homeless Program Division coordinator
WAILUKU – The County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns (DHHC) last week announced the selection of David Nakama as its Homeless Program coordinator.
Nakama will lead Maui County’s new Homeless Program Division, the first of its kind in the state.
Born and raised on Maui, Nakama studied at Weber State University in Utah and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has over 18 years of experience as a professional social worker with the State Judiciary.
The Homeless Program Division will work in collaboration with service providers and federal, state and county agencies to develop ongoing strategies to end homelessness, with a focus on addressing homeless impacts and prevention, and supporting housing initiatives and public education.
This division will also play a key role in developing, utilizing and maintaining the Maui County Coordinated Entry System. It will assist individuals and families in securing permanent housing through the Homeless Management Information System and the Housing First approach.
