Kahana Canoe Club awards three scholarships
LAHAINA – At its annual end of regatta season banquet on July 30, Kahana Canoe Club announced the awarding of three 2016 KCC scholarships.
Receiving a $1,000 scholarship was Ciara Kahahane, a 2012 Kamehameha Schools Maui graduate and a 2016 University of Hawaii at Manoa graduate. Ciara is now a first-year law student at the William S. Richardson School of Law at UH-Manoa.
Receiving $1,500 scholarships were Hannah Pohai Miyamaoto, a freshman at Brigham Young University, and Kylie Salvador, a freshman at UH-Maui. Both Kylie and Hannah are 2016 Lahainaluna High School graduates.
Kahana Canoe Club President and longtime paddler Uncle John Kuia stated, “I am so very proud that we are a canoe club that values its keiki and their education. We paddle forward together as one ‘ohana.”
Scholarship Chairperson and Board Member Diane Delos Reyes added, “Since 2008, we have awarded more than $24,000 in scholarships to Kahana Canoe Club’s young men and women. We have helped ten of our keiki paddlers to go after their dreams. And we stick with them – we have seen four of them graduate from college, and now we even have one in law school. I am so very proud of what this little club has done for Kahana’s youth and for their – and our – future.”
