Local business 5A Rent-A-Space supports Rotary recycling project
LAHAINA – The “Go Green” Third Saturday Recycling project, jointly run by the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset and Malama Maui Nui, with funding from the County of Maui, owes much of its success to the Honokowai business 5A Rent-A-Space and the company’s general manager, Liz May. Her support of the project demonstrates the role local businesses play in community outreach.
Under the direction of May, who arrives at the monthly Saturday event in the early morning and remains until after its 12 p.m. finish time, 5A Rent-A-Space oversees set-up and cleanup; provides tents, chairs and tables; and buys refreshments for volunteers. The storage company also donates a truck used for the collection of electronic waste, including computers and televisions, which is filled to capacity every month.
“The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s ‘Go Green’ recycling event simply wouldn’t happen without Liz and 5A’s tireless commitment,” said Lahaina Sunset Rotary President Sandy Schneider. “As a local business leader and community activist, she truly exemplifies Rotary’s motto of ‘service above self.’ “
5A Rent-A-Space’s participation in the recycling project enables the local community to use a much-needed service.
“Recycling fulfills an important need on the West Side, and 5A Rent-A-Space is proud to be part of the project,” said May. “We are committed to sustainability practices and see the Rotary recycling event as vital to keeping materials out of our island’s landfills.”
In addition to participating in Rotary’s Third Saturday Recycling, 5A Rent-A-Space also supports charitable groups, including Women Helping Women, Maui Food Bank and the Salvation Army.
“As a local business with a strong spirit of aloha, we feel a responsibility to support our West Side families beyond the professional services we offer,” said May. “Helping to facilitate the work of community-based organizations like Lahaina Sunset Rotary and others is a great way to do that.”
The next “Go Green Third Saturday Recycling” event will be held on June 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at Lahaina Cannery Mall. All recyclables qualify for drop off except oversized tires and household goods. There is a $5 charge for each tire; all other items are accepted without charge. No fees are paid to residents for recyclables delivered to the event.
